Poetry Walk

Now Open!

Poems from across the county, country, and world are featured on the newly installed Poetry Walk along The Summit Loop Trail. In collaboration with the Sullivan County Library, Loyalsock Foundation is celebrating National Poetry Month with a temporary installation of original and published poetry, displayed on The Summit Loop for the community to enjoy as they hike the trail this spring.

Local poets include elementary students, community members, and Sullivan County residents living abroad. You’ll find a few familiar poems along the path, as well as some hidden gems. The poems reflect themes of nature, recreation, and love of the outdoors.

The Poetry Walk is designed to promote literacy, learning, and wellness, along with a deeper appreciation of the natural world in our community. Poems will be on display through approximately June 1, and The Summit Loop is open to the public daily from sunrise to sunset.

Approximately 40 original poems were submitted for the Poetry Walk. We are appreciative of all the poets who supported this project.

Poems by the following writers can be found on The Summit Loop:

Pat Arcaro, Bonalyn Mosteller, John Richards, Sophia Marrow, Gage Preston, Leah Mosier, Lillian Wood, Caddis Dunham, Dennis Gould, Robina Rader, Lester Richard Bahr, Peter Ladd, Ed Rogers, Alshaad Kara, William Conner, and Katherine Conner.

Since we could not fit all the poems on the trail, we’d like to share the remaining submissions below.

The Poetry Walk is a project of the Sullivan County Library made possible through a grant from the Friends of the Sullivan County Library with funding from the Lycoming County United Way which serves Sullivan County.

What is a Poetry Walk?

Poetry Walks are a version of Story Walks. So what’s a Story Walk? A Story Walk is a movement and literacy boosting project that places an illustrated children’s book, taken apart and displayed page by page, along a walking route in a community.

Anne Ferguson, the genius behind the StoryWalk concept, sums it up nicely with these sentences, which she asks to be posted when creating a StoryWalk: “The StoryWalk® Project was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration with the Kellogg-Hubbard Library. Storywalk® is a registered service mark owned by Ms. Ferguson.”
